4 Reasons to Keep Inventory of your Storage Unit.

It is the question that is asked way too many times: ‘Where is my …?’ and ‘Have you seen my …?’ Especially when it comes to storing your valuables off site, not having some sort of inventory, can actually make it easier to lose track of your things.

We really recommend making strides towards being fully aware of what things you are storing with your facility to give you peace of mind, and an overall organized storage experience.

As we said a few blog posts ago, it can really help to plan ahead before storing with anyone, to make it easier for you to get the things you need when you need them. This is just another step in the right direction for having an efficient method of storing and retrieving your valuables.

Here’s 4 reasons why you should keep an inventory of your storage unit.

Organization.

If you’re anything like me, being in control of situations is a high priority for you. There’s nothing worse than looking for something and having no clue the last time you saw it, or whether it was packed in that fragile box that’s sitting at the back of your 10x30 storage unit. It can be a very stress inducing thing trying to rack your brain retracing your steps for the last 6 months.

Money, Money, Money.

If you have a detailed list that tells you where everything that you stored is, it saves you the possibility of having to replace something that’s not actually lost. Especially if it’s an expensive item, it’s not pleasant having spent the money, only to find that missing item a few years down the track when you move into your new home.

Insurance Claim

Having an inventory list can really help with an insurance claim in the unlikely case of fire, flood or even theft. It will be a lot easier for you to recall what things were damaged or lost, and streamline the process of the claim. If you’ve ever had to make an insurance claim before, you’ll understand how much of a blessing this would be.

Spring Cleaning

If you are thorough enough with you inventory list as your packing boxes, you can divide your packing into three categories: trash, give away or pack. Instead of mindlessly packing EVERYTHING you have, you can be a bit more picky with your things, and do a bit of spring cleaning at the same time. If you know you won't be using certain items, you can separate them and plan to give or throw them away.

I hope you can now see the value of taking the time to make an inventory list. Although it may seem like it could be a bit of time and work, it will benefit you in the long run.

In our next post, we’ll dive into how to actually go about writing your inventory.

Have a great week everyone!
